Audio and Music Direction

Rocksmith+ Intro Sizzle Reel

Every day I strive to create, to make something great, to build something with others. For over thirty years music and sound have been my passion and creative outlet, and through games I get to bring others on that creative journey with me. Creating and sharing these experiences with my team, and with millions of players, is what drives me every day. I love to push the bounds of game audio through new technology and innovative solutions. From audio direction to systems design, composition, sound design, even hardware prototyping and engineering, I bring a broad skillset to every project.

For over ten years I have provided direction to both internal and external teams, as well as multiple vendors. Across teams, locations, and disciplines I strive to create a cohesive vision that we all works towards achieving together elevating not only the product, but also the people who bring it to life.

Getting Excited About Melody and Harmony

Menu music sets the tone for your player's experience from the moment they boot up a game. We wanted the tone for Rocksmith+ to be one that was warm and inviting while also keeping players engaged.

What is particularly interesting about this menu music is that it is not simply a looping composition. Instead, it takes advantage of the Wwise interactive music hierarchy to create an ever evolving musical soundscape where multiple sections are chosen at random, and each section filled with many layers fading in and out over time. The result is something that feels through-composed while having enough variation to not hear the same thing twice in a normal play session.

Sound Design and Composition

I am a firm believer that audio serves a purpose larger than itself. Good audio design reinforces player action, the interplay between character and world, and it reinforces the visuals and tactile interactions a player has. Audio does not insist upon itself, rather it heightens the experience at every step and is the polish that makes an experience truly great.

Game Feature and Audio Systems Design

Your audio is only as good as the systems that drive it, and providing creative solutions to complex audio problems is perhaps where I excel most. For many years my work has mainly lived in the confluence where gameplay meets audio and allowing audio systems to drive the player and game play experiences. Making these systems work requires thoughtful design and careful collaboration across disciplines.

About Me

I began playing guitar and piano at age 10. Guitar was the instrument that really stuck, and set me on the path that I continue down today. I left high school at age 16 because music theory was an AP class and they wouldn't let me take it for another two years. Rather than wait, I started college at 16 and studied music at UC Berkeley, Musician's Institute, and then Musicology for my Masters at Cal State Hayward.

At 18 I built my first recording studio under the guise of making money recording local bands. The true motivation, however, was the ability to spend every night writing and recording songs with a few friends who shared the same goal of trying to produce a new song on a daily basis.

Video games crept into those recording sessions and that intersection between music and audio is where I happily remain today.
