Rocksmith+ Onboarding and the Player's Musical Journey

Learning something new is a challenge, and because of that, the onboarding for a game like Rocksmith is very important. With the right knowledge of the player we can present things that are both inspiring and achievable to help them keep moving forward on their musical journey. In order to keep things fresh during this first time user experience the music reacts to the player's choices as they navigate their way through the questions. If you play guitar the music becomes more guitar centric, same for bass or piano. If you're an experienced player the music will be more complex vs simpler if you are new. The sound effects also reflect these choices in a more immediate way as the player navigates through.

In addition to the video of the experience the original design showing the flow and how the music changes as the user progresses through the flow is shown here as well.

About Me

I began playing guitar and piano at age 10. Guitar was the instrument that really stuck, and set me on the path that I continue down today. I left high school at age 16 because music theory was an AP class and they wouldn't let me take it for another two years. Rather than wait, I started college at 16 and studied music at UC Berkeley, Musician's Institute, and then Musicology for my Masters at Cal State Hayward.

At 18 I built my first recording studio under the guise of making money recording local bands. The true motivation, however, was the ability to spend every night writing and recording songs with a few friends who shared the same goal of trying to produce a new song on a daily basis.

Video games crept into those recording sessions and that intersection between music and audio is where I happily remain today.
